LAGOS -An environmentalist, Mr. Taiwo Adewole, has urged urban dwellers to park their cars and use more of public transportation to protect the environment.
Adewole, the Managing Director, Taiwo Adewole & Associates, told newsmen in Lagos that few cars on the road would help to reduce emission of carbon monoxide which pollutes the environment.
“Nigerians should use more of public transport and go for shopping with their own bags rather than collect cellophane bags from shopping centres which degrade the environment.
“Office workers can also initiate a car pool by taking turns to drive their colleagues to work in their individual cars to reduce carbon monoxide and save some money,’’ he said.
Adewole said natural disasters like flooding as witnessed recently in Ibadan, Oyo state, was due to blockage of drains caused by indiscriminate disposal of cellophane bags.
The environmentalist said global warming is caused by non-adherence to the rules of nature, especially by people in developing countries.
He said people in developed nations were making progress in conserving and preserving their environment.
Adewole urged the non-governmental organisations (NGOs) on environmental protection and awareness in Nigeria to be more creative in sensitising the people on the benefits of going green.
