Edo State: Between Governance And Grandstanding

By CHARLES AFE IKHAGBE

Today the people can see for themselves the difference between Adams Oshiomhole and the rest. After Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia and Professor Ambrose Ali, the state went dead; everybody went to sleep. But Adams has rejuvenated the state; he has woken the people up. If it was in a society where polls opinion matters, by now we would have known the loser and the winner. Oshiomhole would not even go through the rigours of campaigning. There is a new Edo State today and anybody who cannot see it is not fair to the people of the state and they should reject the person - Asari Dokubo.

Edo 2012: Why Esan Youths Endorse Governor Oshiomhole

Basic Education Revolution In Edo State

By J. S. Emoabino (KSM)

The foundation of anything and everything we do in life would ultimately determine the level of a success story that will be ultimately told.

For example, there is the common saying that the amount of comfort you derive from lying on your bed is predicated on the way it is laid. That being so, the primary stage of education is no doubt highly fundamental to the future of a society that desires qualitative education. If the primary stage on the educational ladder is weak, then it will be an act of self-deception for us to expect qualitative education at a higher level. What will eventually happen is that, standards would have to be deliberately compromised for many to be absorbed at tertiary level.

This disgusting state of affairs, was what characterized primary education before the emergence of Comrade Oshiomhole as governor of Edo State. Conscious of the fact that it is only through qualitative and free primary to secondary junior education would a greater Edo emerge, and above strengthened by modern and state of the art infrastructures, the governor, through the Ministry of Education, and SUBEB, has given a new academic and infrastructural facelift to education in Edo State. Of a truth, a visit to any of the hitherto collapsed and abandoned schools will reveal the commitment of Oshiomhole, not only to restoring lost glory in this sub-sector, but also, to re-integrating our system into the mechanism of globalization. And that explains why all the schools that have been rebuilt are stuffed with modern educational equipment/facilities.

Pursuant to the UBE vision that at the end of nine years of continuous education, every child that passes through the system should acquire appropriate levels of literacy, numeracy, communication, manipulative and life skills, and be employable, useful to himself and society at large etc, the present administration in Edo State is leaving no stone unturned to strengthen education from the primary level then up to the secondary stage where a child will now feel a sense of adequacy and confidence.

Opposition does not appear to see anything good in what the governor is doing.
This is bad politics, but thank God there is conscience. The more they pretend not to see what we are doing the more they will be flogged on all corners of their hearts by their consciences. In any case, for us in SUBEB, we remain unswervingly committed to providing a pupil friendly environment to ensure effective learning and teaching, thereby giving functional education with a sound moral content to all our children in Basic Education sector. Infact I have just summarized the UBE mission statement.
On Infrastructural Development in Schools

Before the emergence of Comrade Oshiomhole as Governor of Edo, the state of infrastructure in primary and secondary schools was appalling. This was as a result of the monumental dilapidation in schools. The neglect of education by successive administration and inability to pay UBE counterpart fund by government contributed to the distressing condition of infrastructural deficit in our schools. I want to recall that at the inauguration of SUBEB, the Comrade Governor promised to revamp the education sub-sector by making school environment pupil friendly.

The Board’s approach to school’s development is holistic that is, all buildings are either renovated or constructed with perimeter fence and a gate house to ensure adequate security for the schools. So the new looks currently being worn by our schools have drawn more pupils and students to Government Public and Junior Secondary Schools.

Advice
My advice is that the man who has done this great work, including many other works in the state deserves to be returned on July 14 to complete what he has started.
