NAPTIP Seeks Public Support

Ibadan - Mr. Odetunde Taofeek, the Zonal Coordinator, National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffic in Persons and other Related Matters (NAPTIP), has urged Nigerians to join in the fight against human traffickers.

Taofeek, who made the call in Ibadan at a sensitisation programme on human trafficking and child labour, said traffickers had devised new means to lure their victims.

According to him, the new recruitment methods are the use of false modeling recruitment agencies and social media such as Face book, Twitter and hi5.

He further said: “Other ways are through immigration/visa assistance and securing of foreign football contracts.

“A 2003 Federal Office of Statistics and International Labour Organisation study estimates that there are about 15 million children engaged in child labour in Nigeria.

“These children could be easily forced into prostitution or trafficking.”

Poverty, he said, was identified as the primary factor sustaining human trafficking and child labour in the country.

Joseph Olaitan, the Comptroller of Immigration in Oyo State, urged residents to give intelligence reports on the activities of traffickers.

He also urged traditional rulers to advise their subjects to steer clear of illegal activities.
Mr. Adebayo Akolade, the Assistant Comptroller General of Immigration, Zone ‘F’, said the passports of traffickers should be seized for some years.

“Passport is not a right, but the property of the Federal Government. So, the passports of whosoever wants to use it negatively should be seized,’’ he said.
