Students of the Lagos State University (LASU) have raised alarm over growing cases of ritual killing and armed robbery along LASU/Iba road and other communities around its main campus at Ojo, Lagos.
Some of the students told newsmen that the frequent killings and robberies posed great threat to their lives and their academic pursuit.
Mr. Senapon Ajasa, speaker of the institution‘ Students Union Government, told newsmen no fewer than 10 people have been killed in LASU area in the last two months by suspected ritual killers.
The student leader said that the development had thrown the entire university community into panic as students and other people around the campus now live in fear.
Everybody, particularly the students, is afraid. Ritual killers who remove body parts of their victims after killing them have made LASU/Iba expressway and adjoining communities unsafe.
They operate from as late as 6 a.m. along that notorious road. On their way to school, students usually find corpses whose body parts have been removed around the campus. It is a scary thing,“ he said.
Ajasa said that although no student had so far fallen victim, there was need for the police to take urgent steps to address the palpable feeling of insecurity in the area.
He appealed to police authorities to declare LASU/Iba road a serious crime-prone zone and do all they could to ensure the security of lives in the area.
Another student, Adeyemi Wahab, urged security men at the university to embark on regular patrol of the area in order to assist the police in restoring normalcy to the communities.
Mr. Mike Orji, a cybercafé operator at the institution, told NAN that the development was affecting social and academic activities on the campus as students were forced to leave for their respective homes before it gets dark.
Students no longer wait after their lectures because of this security issue. Everybody is affected including our businesses. Only the police and the state government can help us “he said.
