DAMATURU - Alhaji Lawan Maigoroma, a former commissioner, was yesterday arraigned before a Damaturu Magistrate’s Court for alleged conspiracy and attempted rape of a mad woman.
Reports say that the ex-commissioner was the immediate past chairman of the ANPP in Yobe.
Police Prosecutor Joseph Alagi, told the court that the accused allegedly hired two other suspects, Umaru Doctor and Ibrahim Maimagani, to kidnap the woman from Potiskum.
The prosecutor said the culprits were intercepted on September 22, along with the woman on their way to Damaturu from Potiskum.
He said the suspects confessed that they were sent to bring the mad woman to the former commissioner who was to have canal knowledge of her.
Maigoroma dismissed the allegations, saying that he was in Saudi Arabia on the said day and wondered how he could have been involved in the allegation.
He described the allegation as politically motivated, aimed at tarnishing his image before the public and prayed the court to dismiss it.
Counsel to the accused, Mr. Sanda Yalwa, prayed the court to grant him bail, based on personal recognition, assuring that his client would not tamper with police investigation.
Chief Magistrate Abubakar Mohammed, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500,000 while the case was adjourned to October 29.
