Anambra Screens Athletes For National Sports Festival

ANAMBRA State has begun the screening of athletes to represent it at the forthcoming National Sports Festival, the Acting Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Mr. Cyprian Amuzie, has said.

Amuzie said over the weekend in Awka that the ongoing screening was for the selection of players that would represent the state at the festival’s zonal elimination for team sports.

“Right now we have started screening for the selection of the state team for the zonal elimination in preparation for the National Sports Festival,

“That of handball held at Nkpor on Wednesday and while that of basket ball took place on Saturday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Sports complex,’’ he said.

The permanent secretary said that the initiative was a new beginning for sports in the state, adding that the coming on board of the new commissioner of sports, Dr Edozie Aroh, was a good omen.

“Good enough, we now have a sports and youth development commissioner who has special interest in youth development.

“The ministry is going to give him all the necessary support he needs in line with government’s policy for youth empowerment,” Amuzie said.

According to him, the state will take part in key events like football, handball, basketball and volleyball in both the male and female categories at the zonal elimination.

He encouraged youths in the state to turn out enmasse to participate in the screening exercise.
