Child Incest: The Societal Menace And Risk Factors

BY THERESA ELEGBOGUN

Incest is when some –one in a persons family act an inappropriate sexual way with another member of that family or when a member of a family engages in any sexual activitly or relationship with any member of his or her family. Child incest is when an older member of a family engages in sexual activity with with a younger or a child in that same family. Child incest could occur between a mother and her child, father and his child, uncle and neice, Aunty and nephew, step father or mother and step-child or even between cousins.

It is important to know that no matter what form or manner child incest was practised, from the smallest touch to the evil intent brushing of lips and also to sex. It is an abuse on the child and all cases of child abuse must be treated as severe issues because this abuse turns into disease which in turn affects the child adversely. Child incest exposes the child or victims to physical and psychological disorder. Pschologically, incest affects the child whole belief system, making them see the world and people around them as monsters and people unworthy of their trust and intimacy. Incest cloes not only rob the child of his or her innocence but also pose some harmful effects on the child. The followings are some of the effects of child incest.

Child incest destroys the innocence of a child. Incest makes a child’s life filled with guilt and grieve which they mostly exhibit on their dolls or toy. A child incest victim will always express her/his guict of his or her toy or doll either by staning the doll to show how messed up and shattered his or her own life is. The innocencis joy and happiness of the child’s childhood days are been destroyed, stolen and shathered leaving the child with a ruinous future.

Incest affects the child’s health:-most child incecest victims suffer post-traumatic stress disorder, annaely, depression and phobins making them become byper-sexual when they grow up to become adults, while some of them become rigid and cannot let go ith nyone eventeir atnrs. Most aimes he victms sufer post rmatic ste disorder which an triehught nd eling hatransport them ba heabse ven later on in lie makng them mentlly imbalane.

Child incest affests the child’s academic performace:- when a child isabused his or her mind will never be stable because there is bound to be traumatic disorder which will make them flash back to the activity especially victims who go to school far from home where they can be free or far away from the abuser school and lecture period them becomes their life only free time wherethey can think of their life and the ruin their life has turned into they bacome so trapped in their thought that they don’t concetrate what they are been taught in school. At home after an empty day in school spend their reading time in fear and painful apiety waiting for the time their predactor will devour them withan unstable mind child can never learn in turn cause a drop in their academic performace.

Child incest cause a feeling of selfunderestimating a victim of child incest sees his or her self as a mess, thrash, scattered and worthless human being without feelings and self-esteem. They even feel that they have no control over the lifes, future and the world around them and therefore that their life is a worthless one and a waste.

Child incest delf mutilation and suicide:- a victim who has concluded that his of her life is a waste and worthless turns to other means to end their pains, some begins to relieve their gult gut cutting their body to detest their abuser and if the abuse or the guilt does not go away or step they resolve to ending their lifes with suicide to end the abuse shame, hatred, fustration and pains.

Child incest causing hatred and fustration:- most victim begins to nurture hatred for their family members who could not protect them from their abuser who pretend to love him or her infront of other family members.

It causes the victim to become object of ridicule and pity:- when the victim manages to open up and talk to the family members about his or her plight he or she becomes an intruder and reaker of family bond and unity. Family members then blames the victim for causing or briging troubles into the family and therefore turn tim or her into an object of ridicule and dispise while some will see the victim as object of pity where then can dispose their pity making the victim to feel uneasy and double pain.

It also causes inability to form intimate relation ship at aduldhood:- when a victim grows up he or she experience problems when trying to build relationship with people around him or her not to talk more of venturing into intimate sexual relationship, this is because of their self-loathing sense and lack of truse and also because of their perception of the world as a cruel place where people take advantage for not protecting them from their abuser even though nobody in the family knew what was going on. The anger of not been protected by family members causing fustration in the child which could cause tim to do some funny things to member of his or her family or even avoid them. A child incest victim could transfer hatred from generation to generation and even to people outside the family.

Child incest result to isolation:- the victim decides to keep their thoughts and pains to themselves for fear of notbe believe by family members or for fear of upsetting the family and causing breakup or imbalance in the family so they try to build a very strong and tall wall around their emotions preventing others from seeing their pains and shame. Instead of their wall to protect them from been hurt and fustrated it end up trapping them dowm inside their thought and fear which makes them stay away from family members either to prevent them from seeing family members of other. They grow up becoming introverts who cannot even socialize with others out of fear of not been able to share intimate thought because of their sexual experience and lack of trust.

Child incest causes addition disordo:- most victim drown their past, pains and guilt in alcohol or drugs which they result to as the only means of retrieving themselves of their pains and fustration. And they end up becoming an junkie or drunkard.

Child incest cause bordline disorder:- is an indeterminate condition which makes the victim extibite bachaviours that are aggressive, make the victim suspicios of other, emotionally unstable, impulsive behaviours and make them to experience on unexpected mood swings borderline disorder further generates into depression, dissocative disorder bulimia e.t.c.

Child incest leads to developemental autism:- austim is a disorder that affect the social, emotional and behavioural development of child developmental autism create difficulties in the child’s ability to interact and communicate effectively with others. Once a victim of incist begins to experience a stunt in his or her growtrh when over depressed due to incest then there is a serious problem because austim usually last till the end of the person’s life.

Incest leads to self punishment:- when a victim of child incest grows with the though of worthiness he or she tends to punish themselves unconsciously because their unworthy though or feelings as adult they tend to settle for lesser thing. Careers they will not bring self fulfillment as fulfillment belongs to worthy people, husbands who treat then badly and a lifetime of suffering all this they go through unconsiously because of their feelings and thoughts.
