BENIN CITY – Defending Champions of Lift Above Poverty Organization (LAPO) Annual Quiz Competition for Secondary Schools in Edo State, Gloryland Group of Schools, on Friday, retained its prime position when it again emerged the winner of the 2014 Annual Quiz with 70 points.
In the keenly contested Quiz Competition, the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) Staff School came second with 65 points while Sacred Heart College clinched the third position with a total of 50 points.
The competition featured nine (9) schools in the final stage out of the 49 (forty-nine) schools that participated. The schools, drawn from the three (3) senatorial districts of Edo State were tested in six science-based subjects including English language, Mathematics, Computer Science, Chemistry, Physics and Biology.
Earlier in his opening remarks, the Managing Director/Founder, LAPO, Mr. Godwin Ehigiamusoe represented by the Director, LAPO Micro Finance Bank (LMB), Mr. Moses Ehigiamusoe congratulated the nine schools which made it to the finals, describing the competition as well-organized, orderly and highly competitive to bring out the best in the students.
In her remarks, the Executive Director, LAPO, Sabina Idowu-Osehobo while encouraging the participating students to put in their best, observed that the standard of the Quiz Competition was such that could make them compete favourably with students anywhere in the world, stating that of the 49 schools that entered the contest, only 9 made the finals.
Also speaking, Edo State Commissioner for Higher Education, Barr. Washington Osifo represented by the State JET Coordinator, Mrs. Edyth Ebomoyi, underscored the importance of Quiz Competition in the educational and intellectual development of the student, and commended LAPO for its initiative in organizing the Annual Quiz. She also appealed to LAPO to sustain the tradition while urging other bodies to emulate the organization.
The schools that made it to the finals in the 2014 Quiz Competition include, from Edo South; Edo College, Ihogbe Secondary School and UBTH Staff School, from Edo North, Gloryland Group of Schools, Bishop Oyebode School and St. Angela Girls Secondary School; from Edo Central, Federal Science and Technical College Uromi, Annunciation Catholic College (ACC), Irrua and Sacred Heart College Ubiaja.
Highpoint was the Presentation of Prizes and plaques to the winners, all the participating schools and their teachers.
While the first prize winner, Gloryland Group of Schools, went away with a complete set of computer system and its accessories, the second prize winner, UBTH Staff School won a complete set of Laboratory equipment and the third prize of a set of library Books, mainly science-based, went to Sacred Heart College, Ubiaja.
