Asaba- Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta has charged Nigerians not to allow the nation’s peaceful co-existence to be compromised on the altar of selfish ego.
He urged the people to engage in such actions that would instead deepen the peace and unity of the country.
The governor made the call at an Inter-Denominational Thanksgiving Service to mark the Armed Forces Remembrance Day at the Cathedral Church of St. Peters (Anglican Communion), Asaba, Delta State.
According to him, it is important for Nigerians to shun actions that are capable of dividing the country, to ensure that our peaceful co-existence is not compromised on the altar of selfish ego.
“Terrorism is not a Nigerian affair, it is a worldwide phenomenon.
“We need to support our security agencies in the fight against terrorism and by the grace of God, this nation will remain one indivisible entity”.
The governor said there were fears that the general elections would be violent in the country but that his administration has mapped out preventive measures to curb such violence in the state.
“Next month elections will come, there has been a lot of security concern and there have been prayers everywhere to prevent violence before, during and after the elections.
“As a government, we will not sit and watch, we have put in place preventive measures, so that our people will know that nobody needs to die in an election.”
“We will mobilise our religious leaders, traditional rulers, youth groups and elders to educate our people to minimise election violence”, Uduaghan said.
He called for freedom of candidates to campaign wherever they wanted during the electioneering period and decried reports of threats to stop some people from campaigning in certain places.
The governor thanked the armed forces and commended them for their efforts to keep Nigeria as one indivisible entity and ensure the security of lives and property.
“We appreciate the work of our security agencies, especially their sacrifices to keep the nation as one,” he said.
Earlier, Rt. Rev. Justus Mogekwu, Bishop, Anglican Diocese, Asaba, in a sermon, decried the tendency by some group, whose intention was to Islamise Nigeria at all cost,
He said that the activities of the Boko Haram Islamic Sect were geared towards conquering Northern Nigeria and foisting their religion on the South.
He prayed for peace and unity in Nigeria and called for support for the families of the fallen heroes.
