Port Harcourt –sdp (600 x 310) Rev. Minaibim Harry, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) Governorship Candidate in Rivers, on Wednesday decried the attack on All Progressives Congress (APC) supporters by unknown persons in the state.
He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt that the attack was caused by unemployment and rivalry amongst some political parties in the state.
NAN recalls that APC supporters in Buguma, Asari- Turu and Khana local government areas, were on Tuesday attacked by unknown group on their way to Port Harcourt to attend the party’s presidential campaign flag-off.
Although the police said no casualties were recorded during the incident, the Commissioner for Health in the state, Dr Sampson Parker, claimed that seven persons were injured and hospitalised in an undisclosed medical facility.
Harry, who is also the President of Minaibim Harry Global Peace Initiative, however, urged the people of the state to reject violence.
‘’We are going to empower the young people in the state; the people who have the energy to fight and carry guns.
‘’In my own opinion, it is a terrible thing for us to have young people who will go out to fight, that means that they don’t have the jobs they are doing.
‘’We have people working in banks, people working in offices, who were doing their jobs while this rally was on and none of them went to attack anybody.
‘’So, it shows the level of unemployment in the state.
‘’ So, if we want to tackle insecurity in the state, we must look at making sure that our young people are gainfully employed, so that instead of going to carry arms, they will be in their offices working.’’
Minaibim said that the provision of security was part of his seven-point agenda, if elected governor under the platform of the SDP.
