Lagos  – Nigerian mothers were urged to monitor and control the activities of their children throughout the upcoming general elections.
The President, Christian Mothers, Saints Joachim and Anne Catholic Church, Ikotun, Mrs Josephine Eguavon, made the appeal following increased tempo of electioneering campaigns.
According to her, mothers have a vital role to play in the control of the youths who can be easy prey for perpetrators of crime.
“Mothers should monitor and guide their children, whether they are teenagers or adult, this is a period we must keep strong grip on our family members,” she said.
She said that the concentration should be on those children outside the home, whether married or not, there should be constant communication.
“During this period, a good mother should trace and keep track of the family members no matter their location, advising them to stay away from gangsters,” Eguavon said.
She said that some institutions might be on break while others may not but that the youths could be lured with all sorts of attractive offers to carry out various crimes.
Eguavon also urged religious bodies to join the media in the sensitisation campaign aimed at keeping youths away from crimes.
Also speaking, the Assistant Director, Police Education, Mrs Fidel Morah, urged mothers to exercise their natural powers of bonding and moderating in families.
