A former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, in Edo State, Barr. Osagie Obayuwana, has warned the lawmakers in both senate and the House of Representatives not to allow the lingering leadership crisis that currently rocked the national assembly to divide them saying that power is transient.
Obayuwana, gave the warning yesterday at his office in Benin City, while speaking with the Weekend Observer about the recent political developments in the country. He maintained that the law makers who were voted into power to effect changes on the lives of the people had behaved negatively, by turning the national assembly to a boxing ring simply because of their personal interest.
Obayuwana, who, expressed disappointment over the ways and manners the lawmakers, had treated the people by not allowing governance to take immediate effect, especially in view of the policies and programmes of President Buhari, however, counseled them not to be divided, in order to form a formidable government to achieve the set objectives of this present administration.
Disturbed by the flagrant disobedience of party orders and supremacy, the legal luminary, said that in an ideal democracy, even though, there are standing rules that guide the lawmakers, there was need to obey the indispensability of the party through which they assumed the exalted positions.
The human right activist, noted that while it was appreciable that the party have the prerogative to guide the lawmakers in their functions, the legislators also should not be seen as an antagonists to the leadership of the All Progressive Congress, APC, who have the mandate to mediate into the skirmishes arising from who occupies some principal offices in the national assembly, saying that if the problem is not handled with care, it shall paint the image of the country before the world a bad omen as the expectations of the people towards good governance were very high, while noting that it was the collective responsibility in an atmosphere devoid of rancour that the pressing issues like the fighting of corruption, insecurity, unemployment among others would be addressed, especially now that President Mohammadu Buhari’s recent visit to the US had received a boost.
Obayuwana, however, counseled Nigerians not to be deterred by the current happenings and solicited supports for President Buhari and his team to succeed in the task ahead.
