BENIN CITY-The Chief Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Medical Director of Central Hospital, Benin City, Dr. Omorodion Uwadiae has advocated for a medical insurance to cover Orthopaedics and health needs of the people.
Speaking with The NIGERIAN OBSERVER on the trend of people seeking traditional interventions instead of seeking expert support in treating their broken bones, he harped on the need for government to implement a medical insurance which would help save lives in the long run.
Stating that 67 percent of all breaks in bones need no intervention for healing to take place, he however called on the remaining 33 percent whose cases are serious, especially if involved in a road crash to seek expert medical intervention, instead of patronizing quacks.
Noting that basic surgery could be done by any physician, he however mentioned the fact that specialized treatment involves the use of consultants in the treatment chart, Unlike in traditional practice which relied on guess work.
Dr. Uwadiae maintained that orthopaedic medicine was an interesting, but tedious part of medicine practice in which training and performance is rigorous; for instance, persons have to be investigated to know cause of fracture and family history in order to know if the operation would involve putting metals into the hip and filing such to fit in, if the need aroses.
Unlike other branches of medicine which are popular and in high demand, he noted that the population needing bone Surgeon was not as high in general practice which was why many people did not fully understand their medical relevance
