Abuja – A member of the House of Representatives, Rep. Joseph Edionwele, (Edo State) on Wednesday, says purposeful borrowing is critical for infrastructural development.

Edionwele said this in an interview with the the Nigerian Observer on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said there “was no much ado” about the proposed external borrowing plan by the executive as far as it would be used for viable projects with payback capabilities.

The lawmaker noted that he and many other like minds will give the proposal a positive nod when tabled in the green chamber.

He stressed that the only way out of recession was for government to pump money into the system through massive infrastructural development.

Feeding questions on 2016 budget performance, Ediionwele who is a member of the House committee on Appropriation said the budget had barely achieved 50 per cent performance.

The lawmaker disclosed that from the committee’s interaction with the Minister of Finance and her budget and National Planning counterpart, the dwindling financial fortunes of the country had its toll on financial performance of 2016 budget

Asked how much he had affected the lives of his constituents, Edionwele emphasized that he embarked on extensive empowerment projects programmes and medical outreaches with personal funds, as constituency projects were not forth coming.

Also contributing to the external borrowing. Rep. Sani Saidu (Kastina State), said that external borrowing was necessary as it could help the country out of recession.

According to Saidu, taking loan to service a country is not out of place if it is with the right intention.

“Though we are yet to receive the details from the executive, when we do, the permission will be granted.

“We that know President Mohammadu Buhari very well, we know what he can do, we are not afraid to grant him the permission to take loan from anywhere.

“We know the kind of person he is. If not because of the condition of the country, president Buhari wouldn’t have asked for loan to help the country.

“We don’t envisage any problem, with Buhari. We are confident that he would do the right thing,” he said.
