(Auchi) – The Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, on Sunday advised the residents of the state to continue to perform their civic duties as responsible citizens.

Shaibu gave the advice when he donated N5million to the ongoing building construction project of Immaculate Conception Cathedral, Auchi as part of activities marking the 2017 laity week.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the laity in the Catholic Church is made up all baptized male and female members excluding priests and the religious.

He said that the laity should use the occasion of the Laity week that started today(Sunday) to clean all drainage systems and the communities within the state .

He thanked them for their support and vote that gave victory to the Obaseki/Shuabu joint ticket under the All Progressives Congress in the last governorship elections in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Mr Godwin Obaseki won the September 2016 Edo State Governorship Election.

The deputy governor said that the Obaseki-led administration would deliver the dividends of democracy to the people.

The Parish Priest and Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Auchi, Bishop Gabriel Dunia, promised to lead his members in an environmental sanitation, adding that cleanliness is next to Godliness.

Dunia thanked Shaibu for his contribution to the ongoing church project.

NAN reports that the National President of Laity, Mr Chizoba Nnabor, flagged off the year 2017 Laity Week’s activities in Auchi, with the theme “Family’’.

Nnabor appealed to Christian faithful at every point in time to show God’s compassion to one another.

He also said the church was mandated to protect the family, an organ of creation he described as the most important to God.
