Benin city- As part of efforts to checkmate the unwholesome activities of herdsmen in Edo State, the Edo Civil Society Organizations, (EDOCSO), has appealed to the State House of Assembly to revisit the recently jettinsoned cattle grazing bill in the State.

EDOCSO which made the appeal recently in Benin City through its spokesperson, Comrade Osaze Edigin, enjoined the House to partner all relevant stakeholders in the State towards ensuring an all-embracing legislation to end the menace of herdsmen.

The Bill to establish the control of Nomadic Rearing and Grazing Law was discontinued following consideration of the report of the joint committee on Public Hearing on the bill at the committee of the whole.

According to Comrade Edigin, “We sure need an anti grazing law that will address this present challenge of herdsmen in Edo State ; we want to plead that the Edo State House of Assembly should re-introduce the bill and work with representatives of stakeholders in putting together a robust law for the State because we can not afford to watch our people being attacked and farmlands destroyed on daily basis.”

EDOCSO spokesperson noted that, the grazing bill would have been one of the most sincere approaches by the lawmakers in curbing herdsmen menace in the State, but however lamented the discarding of the bill over what he described as”So much controversies that surrounded the intent of the bill.”

Edigin added, “there is a problem and law must be put in place to address it; the State cannot continue to allow marauding herdsmen to invade farmlands, kill rape, kidnap and do all manner of atrocities in the guise of grazing cattle.

Meanwhile, Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Justin Okonoboh, said, The discontinuation of the consideration of the bill was not the solution to the menace of herdsmen in the State.

The Edo Assembly Speaker advised those who might have solution to herdsmen menace in the State to come up with bills to curb the ugly trend.
