BENIN CITY -With the recent declaration by the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics that Nigeria has come out of economic recession which has thrown new debates on the performance of the All Progressives Congress (APC)- led government and the possibility of President Muhammadu Buhari contesting a second term, the National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun yesterday in Benin City said President Buhari is focused on delivering on his electoral promises.
Speaking to journalists in Benin City, Chief Oyegun said “This is a decision only President Buhari can make and we have to make at it the proper time. For now, he still has nearly two years of painful, strenuous reconstruction of the Nigerian economy and all the other promises he made, both on corruption and security; it is serious work in progress; at the proper, time, he will decide, at the proper time the APC will decide; and the public will know.”
On the threat by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to win power at the centre by 2019, he said. “They are allowed to continue on their dreams; they are just coming out of intensive care unit; so, they need a lot of nurturing and some of these are good for their ego; you remember what happened recently because they know that they don’t have anybody of national statues on their rank trying to recruit Dangote to become their presidential candidate. Thank God Dangote made it so clear in unmistakable terms; there was no but, there was no if; there was no maybe; he just told them, forget it, “perish the thought; so, we wish the PDP luck because we need a virile opposition.
When they start mouthing, we say okay, it is good for their ego; it is good for them trying to get themselves together”
On the agitation for restructuring, Odigie-Oyegun said restructuring has been part of the manifesto of the APC, which he said, insists on devolution of powers and fiscal federalism.
