Lagos – No fewer than Seven people were on Tuesday burnt to death in multiple auto crash that occurred in Alapako-Ogunmakin axis of Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, with one person also seriously injured.
According to eye witness, the crash involved three vehicles with registration number MUS 46 EA (TOYOTA), while two other vehicles Yari and Mack trucks with no number plates
The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Ogun State Sector Command Public Relations Officer, Florence Okpe who confirmed the crash said the accident was caused as a result of wrongful overtaking at the narrowed section of the road where traffic is diverted to enable repairs of the weakened bridges between Fidiwo and Sandcrete around OgunMakin /Alapako Ogun State
She further affirmed that, some victims were burnt beyond recognition adding that the FRSC team assisted by other traffic and emergency agencies evacuated the burnt corpses of the crash victims and deposited at FON Mortuary Ipara.
Okpe stated further that, the crash scene has been cleared for free flow of traffic, adding that It should be noted that traffic advisory was earlier issued by the FRSC on the condition of section of the road as a black spot, warning motorists to drive with caution around the area.
‘When traffic at the portion of the road was to be diverted, the FRSC issued a traffic advisory on 13 December 2017 with traffic signs erected by RCC to caution motorists.
“However a crash still occurred on January 9th, 2018 at the section of the road killing ten people when a Dangote truck collided head on with a passenger bus killing the ten passengers except the two drivers’, she stated.
‘ The FRSC Sector Commander Clement Oladele had in company of the Federal Controller of Works Ogun State Engr Popoola were to meet the leadership of RCC on 16 January 2018, to discuss further safety measures by the construction company as well as intensified patrol by the FRSC around this black spot, to prevent crashes’,Okpe added.
‘The FRSC Ogun State Sector Commander is hereby reiterating the need for motorists to exercise caution and obey the traffic signs erected on this segment of the road which may remain till June 2018 before the repairs is completed and the road open to traffic’.
Okpe advised travellers to refrain from travelling inside containers as the seven burnt victims were travelling inside the container of the truck which caused the crash as it embarked on dangerous overtaking at the portion traffic was diverted and collided with oncoming vehicles.
