BENIN CITY-A Seventeen year-old junior secondary school student has allegedly drowned in Benin.

Nine other students who were said to have also gone with him to swim where rescued by divers alerted during the melee.

Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer for Edo State Police Command DSP Chidi Nwabuzor identified the student as “one Jeffrey Uduagbon, 17, a JSS two student of Iguodala Secondary School, Ogiso area, Benin City”.

DSP Nwabuzor debunked the speculation that seven students of the school drowned in Ezenaka popularly known as Bata River.
Unconfirmed sources said the victim and 10 of his peers strayed from the school premises to swim in the said river, nearby.

It was further gathered that a little boy who was supposed to be part of the team that went to the river had been interrogated by police in Saint Savoir division handling the case.

The tragedy which happened a fortnight ago threw the residents particularly parents into mourning.
