In a bid to champion a way to achieve a cleaner Edo State and develop an action plan on the way forward, a stakeholders meeting has been held.

The meeting which was facilitated by Edo State Waste Management Board in collaboration with Conference for Non Governmental Organisation (CONGOS) held recently in Benin at the Government house.

Speaking at the stakeholders meeting Hon. commissioner of Environment and Sustainability Mrs Dame Omuaha Oni Okpako represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry Mr Lucky Uwasa noted that the Miinstry is working with Edo State Waste Management Board to ensure that waste managers don’t find it difficult to cart away waste from household as well as taking it it at the dumpsite.

He added that a lot has been done and a lot is ongoing in ensuring a cleaner Edo State.

Earlier, The General Manager Edo State Waste Management Board Mr Charles Osadebamen Imariagbe hinted that Edo state Government has done a lot in the area of waste disposal adding that a jingle to that effect has been produced in four major languages namely Pidgin English, Bini, Esan and Estako which is already running in some media houses.

He added that there is need for sensitisation noting that the jingle will help in sensitising the people on the need to properly bag their waste as well as patronize Government accredited waste managers stating that it will discourage illegal dumping of waste in Edo State.

He appealed to the public to desist from dumping waste illegal especially in drains and gutter adding that there are mobile courts sitting to try anyone apprehended.

Also, the president of Conferenece for Non Governmental Organisation CONGOS Comrade Daisy Idufueko added that the business of a cleanser city should concern all members of the public noting that a cleaner city guarantee a healthier environment.

The Commissioner of police Edo State Dan Mallam Mohammed represented by the area commander Benin ACP Godini Agabi while decrying the illegal dumping of waste and offenders of environmental offences noted that there should be a mobile court to try offenders of environmental offences.

Others present at the stakeholders meeting includes, Rep of the commandant Civil defence Benin, The H.O.D Environment Oredo local Government, The Ambassador General of keep the city clean Association of Nigeria Mr Silvanus Ebomache , civil society organizations, Accredited Waste Managers, government officials amongst others.
