BENIN CITY – Don Bosco Science Academy Ekpoma on Friday emerged winner of the Seplat Pear  ls Quiz competition with a total of 74 points to defeat Penile Academy Agbor who got 58 points.

By this feat, Don Bosco Science Academy clinched the star prize money N7 million project based cash courtesy, Seplat Petroleum Development Company.

The first runners up Peniel Academy won the sum of N3 million naira project based cash while the second runners up Deeper Life High School Udu, Warri got N1 million for its effort after beating Brano High School, Benin to win the third place match on a 69 to 64 points aggregate score.

Speaking at the ceremony held at Imaguero College Hall Benin City, Governor Godwin Obaseki while commending the management of Seplat for its consistency in organizing the quiz competition for an un-broken eight year stretch said the event does more than just promoting education.

Represented by the commissioner for Education, Hon. Jimoh Ijegbai, the Governor noted that educational development of the school children remains a core priority for the Edo State Government, stressing that the state was making the right investments in them because it believes that state will have a future only when the children are properly educated.

Said he, “as a government, we are willing to collaborate with professionals, NGOs, research institutions, innovators etc to improve the life chances of our children through the application of science, technology and innovation. We have no choice but to do what is right to change the lives of children in Edo State.

The Chief Executive Officer Seplat Petroleum Development Company, Mr. Austin Avuru represented at the event by the General Manager Western Assets, Mr. Chima Njoku said the programme has been very impactful on the educational careers of students in Delta and Edo States.

He said the academic performance of participants in the competition is greatly enhanced as students are encouraged to study their syllabus extensively, because the questions are drawn from the secondary school syllabus.

The CEO thanked Edo and Delta States Governments for their cooperation in ensuring successful hosting of the annual event, just as he assured of Seplat’s commitment to partnering the two States in building the confidents and capacities of students to excel in examinations.

In her remarks, the General Manager, External Affairs, Dr. Chioma Nwachuku gave a brief account of the progress of the Seplat Pears Quiz since it started in 2012 stating that participation is open to all public and private schools in Edo and Delta States.

She explained that the four schools finalists fought their way through thick and thin as about 852 schools signed in for the competition with 523 of them coming from Delta and the balance 329 from Edo.
