BENIN CITY – History was made on Sunday in Igbogor town as tournament debutants and lucky qualifiers, Edo Cocoa Fc defeated Igbogor FC 5-4 after penalties shootouts to lift the 2019 peter Obaseki football trophy.

The victorious Edo Cocoa FC whose road to final was not an easy one as the team dominated by yorubas qualified to the knock-out stage of the competition as best lossers.

The team which later went ahead to win the tuornament after defeating high flying homers, Igbogor Fc to replicate Portuger’s 2014 Europe feat.

In a post match interview, Coach of the cocoa framers as they team is widely called who was visibly elated thanked the organisers for bringing football as means of addressing youths restiveness in the locality.

He particular commended Mr. Peter Obaseki for sponsoring the competition since 2011, adding that the aim of the competition has since be meant especially in the area of bringing development to the grassroots through football.

Also, the tuornament highest goal scorer, Musa Adeniyi described the competition as one of the best he has played in, stressing that he played against tough defenders to registered six goals in the competition.

While aspiring to donne the green-white-green jersey of Nigeria in future Musa singled out Mikel Obi as his football role model.

Addressing sports writers, sponsor of the annual football ritual, Mr. Peter Obaseki represented by Hon. Edosa Enowoghomwenma said that the competition is aimed at harnessing talents in the area, adding that since 1994, Nigeria has not had the assemblage of good grassroots football.

Edosa said: “For sports lovers like us, we are still clamouring for 1994 team and the only way we can achieve this is to go back to the basis. Since 1994, we have not had assemblage of professional footballers front the grass-roots.

“So, the intent of Peter Obaseki is to use this yearly competition to assemble young potentials that the government and every other football enthusiasts can be proud of.

“In four years time, our aims is to have talents harnessed from this competition that will be representing the state like playing for Bendel Insurance, Super Eagles and others”, he said.

While describing football as unifying game that brings Nigerians together in respective of tribe, religion and race, Edosa promised that next year’s edition which would be the 10th edition is going to be explosive.
