Benin City – In defiance to the police authorities directive, ordering its men to ensure that bail is free, police at Okhoro divisional headquarters in Benin City, Edo state capital last week Monday collected ₦20,000 to release detained mother and her 14 Year Old daughter.

The mother and daughter who allegedly assaulted their neighbor were arrested, after the neighbor had lodged a formal complaint at the station.

However, a man who learnt days later that money was paid to the police to secure their release, went with the mother and daughter to demand a refund, but the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) asked them to come the next day (Friday).

Surprisingly, same Friday the DPO had scheduled to meet with the man and parties involved in the matter, he ordered the rearrest of the mother, leaving the 14years old daughter, co-accused.

The police charged the matter to court, and was granted bail, with the man standing as surety, and she was subsequently allowed to go home.

The matter however took a twist, as the man who is a member of Edo Civil Society Organization (EDOCSO) had related the police misconduct to the network, which re-echoed the call for the refund.

The intervention forced the DPO to cough out the ₦20,000, and was handed over to the owner, in company of the man.

Meanwhile, owner of the money refused to go to the station for the money, fearing she would be arrest due to what the police earlier did, even as it took the man hours to convince her.

The man ended up, calling the DPO, asking him to speak directly with the person, to assure her that nothing of such would happened, of which he did and the money was handed over to her when she arrived at the station.
