BENIN CITY – The Police Command in Edo has called for the clearing of heavy trees and bushy sections of the Benin-Ehor-Auchi highway to curtail activities of criminals.

The state Commissioner of Police, Lawan Jimeta, made the appeal when he led other officers of the command on inspection of the road on Monday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the road is a federal road that links Benin with the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

He said that the cutting down of the trees would make the job of policing of the road easier because criminals do ambush unsuspecting road users in such sections of the road.

He explained that the inspection of the road was part of the command’s strategies to achieve a highway free of crime, including kidnapping.

Besides, he said that the numerous police checkpoints on the road was to ensure that normalcy returns to Ehor Community after the recent communal clash in the area.

Jimeta assured that the command would not relent in its efforts to achieve an Edo free of crime, especially on its highways.
