……Women groups protest rising spate of violent rape

BENIN CITY – Wife of the Governor of Edo State, Her Excellency Betsy Obaseki is calling on Governors across the thirty six States of Nigeria to address the issues of cultism and other underlying factors that have spiked the rate of rape in Nigeria.

Her Excellency Betsy Obaseki made the call while receiving several women groups led by Edo Women Development Initiative on a protest march to the Edo State Government House, in Benin City to demand protection for women and girls in Edo State over the rising cases of rape in the country.

Betsy Obaseki said she and other first Ladies in Nigeria have commenced moves towards ensuring that rape is brought to its barest minimum in the country.

Her Excellency said the frequency and the sordid manner by which these wicked people carry out these assaults; how they rape and kill show traces of cult activities.

She said she intimated her colleague Governor’s wives that they should also address these underlying issues that may be the reason for gender based violence in the country. She assured the protesters that the Governors Wives are all passionate and resolved that this madness will brought to the barest minimum in the country and that these human beings parading themselves as animals in human skin are incarcerated.

She assured them that in Edo State anything that needs to be done will be done and that they can count on her support and His Excellency Godwin Obaseki’s support to ensure that this menace is reduced to the barest minimum.

Earlier, Dr. Roseline Okosun said “as the chair of Edo Women Development Initiative I have brought market women, I have brought our daughters, I have brought school children to come and plead with you to beg His Excellency to secure our daughters”.

The Coordinator of Child Protection Network, Mrs Stella Obehi Ojeme in her address said “we are asking that CCTV cameras be installed in all institution: in the churches, in the mosques, in shopping malls everywhere because that will save evidence, so the issue of anybody tampering with evidence will not arise. We are saying that we want Social Workers in all the schools so that when children are in distress they will be able to identify them and know what is wrong”.

Nigeria has recently recorded at least eight cases of violent and absurd rape among them the case of late Uwaila Omozuwa from Edo state, late Bakarat Bello and Azizat Shomuyiwa from Oyo State, a thirteen year old girl allegedly gang raped in Kano State and a three months old baby.
