LAGOS – Traders and commuters ran for safety when a section of the NURTW members at Idumota area of Lagos Island attacked another over control of a garage on Monday.

Some traders and members of the public who came for their day works and businesses were said to have ran for safety when the two factions of the union were seen brandishing dangerous weapons like cutlasses, broken bottles and knives to attack each other.

According to source, the NURTW Lagos State Chapter had one time divided the disputed portion of the motor garage call ‘Eyi-Eyo’ between three aggressive factions on when to work and allow others too.

Source revealed, “The Eyi-Eyo park was shared between Kunle Poly, Okoro and another Chairman. Kunle Poly boys are to work for two weeks, Chairman Okoro boys for one week, while the other Chairman’s boys will work for the last one week in a month”.

“On the ongoing crisis, Kunle Poly boys had worked for the last two weeks which ended on last Saturday, Okoro boys are to work from Monday to Saturday this week. It was when the Okoro boys started working that Kunle Poly boys went to attack them and wounded one boy called Tolani”.

“It was earlier speculated that Tolani was matched to death by Kunle Poly boys for having guts to challenge them when they struck, but it was later learnt that he only suffered minor injury and has been treated at undisclosed hospital”, he revealed.

Meanwhile, team of Police officers and men from Island and State headquarters, RRS and Special Taskforce members have taken over the affected area, while the NURTW State Chairman and his executive members were seen discussing with the security operatives on ground.

Already, people passing the area to enter and leave Lagos Island including traders in the area have abandoned the route so as to avert any problem and unforseen circumstances.

Efforts to reach the Police spokesman in Lagos to comment on the issue proved abortive as his phone rang but didn’t pick.
