ABUJA – The Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr Mohammed Adamu, says enrolment of retired police personnel into the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) will take place at the various area commands across the country.
Adamu said this on Monday in Abuja at the inauguration of the enrolment of retired personnel for the NHIS.
The I-G said the exercise would be carried out in batches at the area commands for the convenience of retired personnel.
Adamu called on the retirees to visit any police area command closest to them for the exercise.
He said that further details would be provided by the Nigeria Police Health Insurance Organisation.
Adamu noted that his administration inherited a system whereby police personnel across all ranks were delisted from NHIS as they exited service.
He said this had left the retirees with the burden of single-handedly addressing their medical and welfare challenges.
“For those of us still in service, we feel the pains of our retired colleagues who are experiencing this sad condition.
“It is in recognition of this that upon my assumption of office as the I-G, I prioritised the welfare of retired officers and passionately made a representation to the Federal Government.
“The representation is a recommendation that all retired police personnel be retained on the NHIS as a way of appreciating their meritorious services to the nation,” he said.
Adamu said the idea was to ameliorate post-retirement health challenges of ex-police personnel.
He described as historic Federal Government’s approval to retain police personnel on the NHIS, adding that it would advance the reform agenda of the Nigeria Police.
According to him, with this development, all retired police personnel, irrespective of their ranks on retirement, along with their spouses, will have full access to all NHIS services and benefits covered by the Police Health Maintenance Organisation.
