…prioritises women, youths

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said his administration is adopting a bottom-to-top approach in appointing persons to occupy political positions, noting that only competent persons will be appointed to help realize the government’s vision of making Edo great again.

Obaseki disclosed this at the weekend while speaking with leaders of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo North Senatorial District, during an enlarged meeting of the party in Jattu, Etsako-West Local Government Area of Edo State.

The governor, who said youths and women will be prioritized in the appointments, charged leaders from the six local government areas of Edo North Senatorial District to present the best nominees to be appointed from their wards.

Obaseki assured that every ward in each of the six local government areas will be represented in his administration, stressing that power belongs to the people, and the power must start from the grassroots, particularly the ward level.

He said: “Every ward will be represented in my government. I will get Special Assistants (SAs) from each ward across the six local government areas. Leaders must sit down to nominate qualified and the best people that will represent them well in government.

“I will appoint three persons per ward, and one of them must be a woman. During this process, there must not be quarrel or misunderstanding or I will nominate for your ward myself.”

“We plan to build a generation of young leaders as such there is an age limit for SAs. I need young people between the ages of 35 years and below,” the governor noted.

Obaseki continued: “Leaders must meet at the local government level to nominate four persons each that will be appointed as Senior Special Assistants (SSAs). One will be supervising at the local government level, one will be with me in Benin, while the other two will be given special assignments, depending on the area. I need five nominees for each position and out of which two must be women.”

The governor said each local government is entitled to one commissioner, adding that there must be five nominees, out of which two must be women.

“I urge all the leaders in these council areas and wards to give me their very best as I thrive to build a world-class government. These people must not be analogue but conversant with digital. All these nominations must happen before 15th of June 2021.”

On his part, the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Comr. Philip Shaibu said, “It’s time to work in unity and achieve the set goals of this administration. Government can’t work without your support.”
