BENIN CITY – The first ever Edo State female Cricket league put together by the Edo State Cricket Association kicked off weekend in Benin City in grand style at the Edo Boys High School Cricket pitch.

The league which is the first of its kind in Nigeria and West Africa saw its opening game between Ekpoma Supernova CC and Idia Royals CC. Although Ekpoma Supernova CC appeared favourite before the start of the game, Idia Royals CC ended as winners.

The game started with a toss which the Idia Royals CC won with the captain of the side, Agatha Obulor, who later ended the game as the player of the match, electing to bat first.

The first innings ended with Idia Royals scoring 149 runs for the loss of 2 wickets in 20 overs. Agatha Obulor, who is the captain of the side scored 68 runs, making herself the stand out performer for the first innings, a record which also earned her the player of the match award.

In the second innings, Ekpoma Supernova CC needed at least 150 runs to win the game, but unfortunately for them, the Idia Royals CC ladies where up for the task as they did justice to their opponents, by successfully bowling 10 wickets of the Ekpoma Supernova CC ladies before they could equal the runs already made by them .

The league is expected to hold over the next five weeks with 12 matches expected to be played.
