3 Jailed For Theft

IKORODU (Lagos) - An Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, has sentenced three men to nine months imprisonment each for stealing items worth N240, 800.

Magistrate Ademola Adesanya sentenced the trio of Bidemi Adeola, 24, John Peter, 26, and Friday Peter, 26, without any option of fine.

The convicts, all of No. 4 Omoleye St. Ogijo, Ogun State, were on June 15 arraigned on a three-count charge of conspiracy, break-in and stealing.

They pleaded guilty to the offences.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Fola Takunbe, told the court that the convicts had on June 12 at 1.45 am broke into two shops at Agbala Daniel Area, Ikorodu.

The prosecutor said that the convicts on the same day at about 3.00 am, also entered the house of one Mr. Ajibade Awa at No.8 Shorinmade St., Eyita, Ikorodu, and stole one HI handset, a Samsung phone, Jewelries and N27, 000 cash totaling N217, 000.

Takunbe said that the offences contravened Sections 285, 305(b), 409, Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State, 2011.

In his ruling, the magistrate said, “after carefully considering the case and the fact that there was conspiracy, break in and stealing, although the government advocates non-custodial punishment to decongest the prisons, it cannot be applied in this case.

“The Lagos State government wants to rid the state of criminally inclined people and you are among those frustrating the efforts of the government.

“You are hereby sentenced to nine months imprisonment each with hard labour. I pray that at the completion of the sentence, you would have learnt your lessons”.
