UYO - The Chairperson of Akwa Ibom Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC), Mrs Gloria Ukpong, says it will conduct local government election in the state on June 9.
Ukpong, who made this known in Uyo while briefing newsmen, said that the chairmanship election would hold in 22 of the 31 Local Government Areas.
She explained that elections would not hold in nine Local Government areas because the candidates in those places were returned unopposed. “AKISIEC will only go to the nine local government areas to return the candidates in those areas since only one political party filed in candidates for the position of chairman,’’ she said.
The chairperson further explained that out of the 329 wards, elections would take place in 164 wards, adding that the remaining wards were returned unopposed.
She also disclosed that that all non-sensitive materials had been sent to all the local government areas, while sensitive materials would be delivered 24 hours to the election.
Ukpong said: “All materials have arrived in the state and in enough quantities. Staff have been trained, both permanent and ad hoc, all awaiting final postings.
“The last session of trainings for other categories of election personnel is coming up within the next week.’’
She assured that security agents were working closely with the commission to ensure hitch free polls.
The commission appealed to politicians and other stakeholders to avoid violent campaigns and accusations, so as not to heat up the polity.
