nyscBENIN CITY – Edo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Funso Adebanjo has assured members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) recruited as ad-hoc staff for next month’s general election of their safety.
The commissioner in his remarks at a one-day sensitisation programme on the election organised in Benin City by the Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Benin City, His Grace, Most Rev. Dr. Augustine Akubeze, also prayed the NYSC authorities to pay corps members allowances before the elections to enable them put necessary logistics in place for their welfare while they will be on duty during the elections.
The plea, he said has become necessary in other for the corps members not to accept favour from politicians, a development which could make them compromise aspects of the elections process.
Commissioner Adebanjo who was represented by Greg Anim informed that measures have been put in place to check cases of ballot box snatching and other incidences of electoral malpractices.
According to him, efforts were being made to reach community Heads for the purpose of boosting security in their respective domian during and after the elections.
While urging parents and care givers to monitor their children and wards carefully to check against being used to commit electoral offences, he urged voter to stay at least 300 metres away from polling units after casting their votes to avoid the incidence of over crowding at polling units.
In his address, host of the Senior, Most Rev (Dr) Akubeze noted that the church of Christ, especially the clergy are a political, hence the pulpit should not be used to solicit for votes the seminar was attended by representatives of some political parties and other stakeholders.
