IBADAN – Dr Moses Alao, a consultant Obstetrician and Gyneacologist, Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, has said that locally raised chicken, red meat and refined sugar could prevent conception.
Alao made this disclosure in Ibadan while fielding questions from the newsmen.
“Conventionally raised chicken is full of antibiotics and hormones, which can have a detrimental effect on hormone balance and health.
“Too much red meat increases the amount of ammonia in the body, which can interfere with implantation of the egg in the uterus.
“Red meat can also be detrimental for men as it increases acidity and affects sperm activity; sperm performs better in alkaline conditions.
“Too much refined sugar could lead to insulin resistance, which could lead to a condition that affects ovulation and is one of the leading causes of female infertility,” he said.
Alao said that apart from taking normal vitamins supplements, there were also foods that could boost fertility in women and men wishing to conceive.
“Banana is a magic nutrient which contains Vitamin B6 and is one of the most important vitamins in aiding conception as it regulates the hormones.
“A B6 deficiency can lead to irregular menstruation and can also lead to poor egg and sperm development,’’ he said.
He added citrus fruits were fertility boosters.
He said that the acid in them were responsible for sperm motility, a condition where the sperm moved at a fast rate to meet the egg and cause conception.
