BENIN CITY – The annual press week of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, (NUJ) Edo Broadcasting Service (EBS) chapel commenced on Friday with a charge on journalists to always discharge their duty professionally.
The Chairman of the occasion Chief (Sir) Oseni Elamah gave the charge in his opening remarks.
Chief Elamah who is also the Executive Chairman of the Edo State Internal Revenue of the (EIRS), said rather than targeting a particular person, journalists should focus their report on issues.
The EIRS boss who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the agency, Mrs. Vera Obada enjoined journalists to always see professionalism as their watch word in the course of discharging their duties.
He advised journalists to always use the simple language for the purpose of better understanding by both the learned and unlearned.
He disclosed that the revenue generation of Edo State was at N2.5b but later dropped due to the huge relief granted to the taxpayers under the Pay As You Earn.
The Chairman of the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Comrade Desmond Agbama described the event as apt, adding that it affords the people the opportunity to air their voice.
He urged other chapels to key into such initiatives that would bring technocrats together to deliberate on issues as they affect the society.
Comrade Ivy Adodo, Chairman of the NUJ, EBS Chapel, said the event was an annual one aimed at bringing together members of staff to listen to topical issues from professional lecturers.
She used the occasion to appeal to the state government to implement the weighing allowance for journalists, working tools and training with regards to election coverage, pointing out that the journalist only knows when he/she leaves home but does not predict when he/she returns home
