BENIN CITY-The Edo House of Assembly yesterday Passed a resolution calling on relevant local government officers to apprehend and sanction traders displaying wares on walkways.
The motion was moved by the Deputy Speaker, Mr Bright Osayande, member representing (APC Ovia North -East 11)constituency and seconded by the deputy majority leader, Mr Sunday Osazemwinde, member representing (APC Ovia North East 1) constituency
Moving the motion, Osayande said the walkways gave a better aesthetic projection of the state.
He said the walkways were constructed to ease movement for pedestrians.
He explained that the walkways around market places have been illegally converted to trading spots.
The deputy speaker noted that it was the duty of the local government councils to regulate the activities in and around market places.
Osayande further warned against the collection of rates from traders who display their wares on the walkways.
Other lawmakers supported the motion. The speaker, Victor Edoror directed that copies of the resolution be sent to the 18 local government councils and the governor for immediate action.
Edoror also during plenary congratulated the Ooni of Ife, designate Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi on his appeoval as the Ooni of Ife designate.
