Edo State Ministry of Communications and Orientation will collaborate with the Society Builders (SB) to disseminate information on the importance of couples to know their genotype before getting married to stop the spread of sickle cell anemia in the country.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Communications and Orientation, Sir. Barr. Solomon Imohionsen who disclosed this during the third anniversary and societal impact awards held by the Society Builders (SB) in Benin City said it should not be about relationship but the future of the children.
According to him, the Edo state government is very conscious about the health of the people in the state that is why there are various heath schemes by the government.
While commending the Society Builders (SB) for the enlightenment campaign and lecture on sickle cell, the Permanent Secretary, noted that if sustained it will reduce the number of sickle cell patients.
Earlier, the Coordinator, Society Builders, (SB) Precious Orunmwense disclosed that the government should enforce the mandatory test for couples before they get married to stop the spread of sickle cell.
“In Nigeria we are one family and if anyone is going through a challenge, we should all be affected. The campaign against sickle cell anemia should be resurrected and we are going to be at the forefront of the campaign in the next one year,” he added.
While appealing for support to stop the spread of sickle cell, Precious Orunmwense said everyone can do something by ensuring that they know their genotype to avoid getting married to a carrier
In a lecture titled, “ How to prevent and manage sickle cell anemia by Martina Efe Evbomwan, it was noted that the sickness is very painful and expensive, therefore it is necessary to know the genotype before getting married
“Know your correct genotype by doing the test at least three times to confirm the results of such tests. You cannot afford to marry anybody. Also make resting a priority and people living with sickle cell disorder should be supported.
The highpoint of the three years anniversary of the Society Builders (SB) and the Societal Impact Awards which will be held annually was the presentation of awards to Mr. Andy Bello, Head, Silver Bird Communication, Benin, Miss Eunice Odigie, Educationist, Brigadier General (Rtd) Don Osaze Ikponmwen and Barr Douglas Ogbankwa, Chairman, Nigerian Bar Association, Benin Branch.
