Edo State First Lady, Mrs Betsy Obaseki, on Wednesday, 8 February, 2023, received the 2022 Sheroes Merit Award with a promise to continue to contribute to the girl child education and development in Nigeria.

The award plaque was presented to the first lady during a brief ceremony in Government House by the Head Coach of Edo Queens Football Club, Moses Aduku, who received the honour on behalf of the First Lady at the last NWFL Sheroes Preseason Tournament which held in October 2022.

Receiving the award, Mrs Betsy Obaseki expressed gratitude to the organisers of the women football preseason tournament, Naija Ratels Foundation, for the honour done her.

“I am grateful and thankful to Sheroes and everyone who have reconned with our work in Edo State, extending their goodwill to us in Edo State. Let me again congratulate our girls who did us proud at the preseason tournament in Abuja. Congratulations to Coach Moses Aduku for a job well done”. The First Lady remarked

The organizers of the Sheroes Cup 2022, Naija Ratels Sports Development Foundation, honoured the Edo State First Lady, Betsy Obaseki, with a merit award for her role in the girl child development and her invaluable contributions to the growth of women football in the country through the annual Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament.

Edo Queens finished second behind Delta Queens with N500,000 (Five Hundred Thousand Naira) cash prize at the 4th edition of Sheroes Pre-season Cup tournament held in Abuja in October, 2022. Twelve teams participated in the tournament.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Rt Hon Comrade Philip Shaibu has congratulated the Edo First Lady, Her Excellency, Betsy Obaseki, on the Sheroes Preseason 2022 Merit Award.

The sports loving Deputy Governor described the award to the First Lady as a well deserved one, especially as it was not one solicited.

“The award is not just for our First Lady alone but for the entire Edo State. The award is coming in recognition of Her Excellency’s advocacy and fight against social vices including human trafficking which was a plague.

Edo has been put in the global map as champions, helping to promote the girl child education and development which our First Lady projects. I congratulate our First Lady and we will continue to support Her Excellency in the girl child development project.

Let me also congratulate Edo Queens who have been outstanding. We want the girls to go continental having dominated the women league. That is our target.” He said.
