Nigeria’s Flying Eagles
triumphed over the Dominican Republic 2-1 in a come-from-behind efforts in the opening game of Group D, at the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup on Sunday at the Estadio Malvinas Argentinas in Mendoza, Argentina.

The ongoing tournament in Argentina is the 13th appearance at the U-20 World Cup for the Flying Eagles of Nigeria who were runners up in 1989 and 2005 in Saudi Arabia and The Netherlands respectively.

The Nigerians fought for victory to overpower Dominica Republic after coming from a goal deficit to claim vital three points in a thrilling encounter.

Knowing they were together in the same group with Italy and five-time winners Brazil, Nigeria and the Dominican Republic desired the best result from Sunday’s contest.

The Ladan Bosso-led boys came into the game on Sunday as favourites of the Group D tie, and displayed admirable toughness.

The Flying Eagles dominated the game against the debutant Dominican Republic.

According to TheCable, Jude Sunday and Ibrahim Lawal proved to be a handful for the Republican defence with pace and trickery from both flanks of the Nigerian attack.

Xavier Valdez, in goal for the Republicans, was called into action twice in the early stage of the match.

Benjamin Fredrick was too aggressive while attempting to halt an attack down the right flank and he stumped on the boot of Gomez de la Cruz inside the Nigerian goal area.
