In commemoration of the World CleanUp Day, the Nigeria Green Earth Initiative (NGEi) carried out a sanitation exercise in some parts of Benin City, Edo State capital, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Sustainability, Edo State Waste Management, and Oredo Local Government.
The initiative’s focus was on revitalizing key areas in the heart of Benin City, including TV Road, Oba Market, and Second West Benin City. Volunteers from NGEi and key stakeholders came together not only to clean these areas but also to raise awareness about the critical importance of maintaining a clean environment.
During the event, NGEi members engaged with market women and residents, sharing insights into the significance of World CleanUp Day and the essential role each person plays in preserving the environment. They emphasized the need for responsible waste disposal and encouraged individuals to register with the appropriate waste collection agencies to further strengthen waste management efforts.
The General Manager, Edo State Waste Management Board, Mr. Charles Imariagbe, commended members of NGEi for the unwavering commitment as a youth-led organization to contribute to the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration’s vision of maintaining a green and clean state.
The founder and president of NGEi, Ugowe Davies, expressed his gratitude to the dedicated volunteers who braved heavy rainfall to participate in the cleanup. He also extended his appreciation to the various government agencies present, acknowledging their pivotal support in making the event a success.
According to him, their collective efforts showcased the impact that collaboration between government agencies and passionate grassroots organizations like NGEi can achieve in creating a cleaner and more sustainable future.
“The 2023 World CleanUp Day event in Benin City not only left a cleaner environment but also served as a reminder that together, through collective action and education, we can build a greener and healthier tomorrow for all,” je said.
