…Teams Edo Rugby, Handball qualify for Asaba 2024

The South-South zonal elimination, preceding the 2024 National Youth Games (NYG) in Asaba, Delta State begins in Benin with Edo Rugby Boys and Girls teams edging out team Bayelsa to secure qualifications for the Asaba Youth Games.

The event started on Wednesday, August 28, in Benin City as scheduled, with screening of athletes from various states of the South South zone. The seamless screening exercise paved the way for competitions immediately.

In the Rugby-Boys event, team Edo overpowered Bayelsa 25-20 in a two-legged encounters as the two states were the only contenders in the energy sapping game. In the girls category, it was an easy ride for team Edo as their Bayelsan opponents did not show up.

Athletes from Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom and Rivers States are currently battling hard in the nine games featured in the South South zonal contest for teams toward qualifications for the 8th Edition of the National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State.

In the Handball event, team Edo (female) whitewash Team Cross River 34 – 8 to qualify for games proper.

Games continue tomorrow with Edo Football team in face-off with Akwa Ibom in the second match tomorrow afternoon. Kick off time is 12:00 pm while Cross River is paired against Bayelsa in the first match at 9:00 am. Winners game is scheduled for 4:00 pm at the Western Boys College, Benin City.

In Basketball event fixtures, Akwa Ibom faces Cross River (M) at 8:30 am while team
Edo file out against Bayelsa (F) at 9:15 am.

Cross River will be against Bayelsa (M) at 10:00 just as Akwa Ibom is paired against Bayelsa at 10:30 am.

Volleyball, Basketball and Trado Sports -Abula events are staged at Wire Road and Etete Indoor Sports Hall respectively.

The South-South zonal elimination comes to an end on Sunday, September 1, in Benin City.
