The Lagos State government and the Jospong Group of Companies (JCG) have agreed with the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources to create waste management treatment plants in the state.

The agreement was formalized by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Monday, February 26.

The executive chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, and the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources Commissioner, Wahab Tokunbo led the initiative.

Acknowledging that the waste management facility would help transform the environmental situation of the state, as well as help reduce pollution as these plants produce compost, which would also help to boost the agricultural sector of the state.

Likewise, this proposed plan to build waste treatment plants in Lagos would serve as a sustainable solution to suppress environmental pollution and crisis and enable a healthy environment to thrive.

Jospong assured that with the presence of JCG in Nigeria, the state is well assured of its help in passing across knowledge and expertise in waste management and treatment.

“We have learnt a lot of lessons from Ghana and we are here to share our technical and operational expertise to help improve the sanitation landscape of Lagos State,” he said.

The Executive Chairman also stated that his company will collaborate with the upstream operators (collectors) of Lagos State so that they can be supported with equipment to make their work much more effective and efficient.

While speaking, the Lagos State Commissioner of Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, also disclosed that the agreement would be beneficial to the state and showcase Lagos state’s commitment to establishing a healthy environment through a Public Private Partnership arrangement.

“We are utilising a PPP arrangement to address our waste management challenges effectively.

“Our goal is a cleaner, greener and prosperous Lagos. And we are fostering a conducive environment for the private sector to strive,” he mentioned.

Wahab also said that Lagos State must find value in its waste instead of wasting it and that the arrangement is established as a way to explore ways to convert these wastes into treasures and other valuable resources.
