The Oredo Local Government Council, led by Executive Chairman, Dr. Tom Obaseki, has announced the Oredo School 5-Aside Football Championship, a flagship event of the Oredo Games 2024.

In his speech, the Executive Chairman, Oredo Local Government Council, Dr. Tom Obaseki, expressed great enthusiasm for the event at a press conference on Monday in Benin City, noting that the tournament aims to discover and develop young talents in football at the grassroots level.

The Executive Chairman further disclosed that an international scout would be present to identify exceptional players for international football opportunities.

 

The competition kicks off Thursday, May 2 through Saturday, July 13, 2024, featuring students from various Schools in Oredo Local Government Area competing for the extolled title.

The championship is scheduled to be hosted in four centers namely Uwa Primary School, Owegie Primary School, New Era College, and Anglican Girls Grammar School all in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

According to the Council boss, the event has received support from notable partners, including the Edo State Sports Commission, 70s Grill, and Edo State Drivers Welfare Scheme.

In his remark, the Executive Chairman, Edo State Sports Commission, Olympia Yusuf Ali, applauded Dr. Tom Obaseki’s commitment to societal development and pledged the commission’s support for the event.

 

Ali described sports as not only a game but an industry.

The Oredo School 5-Aside Football Championship sets a precedent for Local Government investment in sports development in Nigeria, demonstrating Dr. Tom Obaseki’s resolve to support the future of football in the country by developing raw talents in Oredo through the “Catching Them Young” initiative.”

Distinguished persons present and the press brief include the Secretary to Oredo Local Government Council, Dr. Wellington Osadolor, HOLGA, Dr. Osaini Igbinigie, Ag. Permanent Secretary, Edo State Sports Commission, Dr. Emmanuel Igbinosa, Education Secretary LGAE, Ella Idahosa, Supervisory Councilors, and School wards from the government area.
