In a groundbreaking move, Dr. Tom Obaseki, Executive Chairman of Oredo Local Government Council, declared the Oredo School 5-Aside Football Championship open on Thursday at the Uwa Primary School Football Field in Benin City.

The Oredo Games 2024 5-Aside football tourney flagship event, an initiative of Dr. Obaseki’s administration, promises to be an exciting tournament.

The opening ceremony featured a thrilling match between Ohuoba and Ogboe Primary Schools, showcasing exceptional skills and setting the stage for the 60-game tournament spanning from May 2 to July 13, 2024.

Ogboe Primary School secured a 1-0 victory in the opening match, with Dennis Ijesurobo scoring the only goal.

Dr. Obaseki expressed his satisfaction with the participating schools’ performance, emphasising the importance of sports in child development and the Council’s commitment to harnessing raw talents.

He encouraged support for the tournament, which aims to unite school children and discover hidden talents.

Other matches saw Ogboe College win 3-1 against New Era College through penalties after a scoreless draw.

The Oredo Local Education Secretary, Ella Idahosa, and the Deputy Director of Sport for Edo South Senatorial District, Doris Omoragbon, praised the initiative, acknowledging its potential to produce future stars.

The tournament continues on day two with New Era College, Uwa Primary School, Anglican Girls Grammar School, and Owegie Primary School hosting the games, aimed at harnessing the potential of young adults in sports in Oredo Local Government Area.

Leading spectators in the Uwa Primary School packed field who came to cheer the game up include the Vice Chairman of Oredo Local Government Council, Hon. Oghogho Abimbo, HOLGA, Dr. Osaini Igbinigie, HODs, Supervisory Councillors, PDP leaders in Oredo Local Government Area, and a host of others attended the football tournament.
