…as seven teams set out to grab the prestigious trophy
The anticipated maiden edition of the Edo State Women Football League (EDWFL) tournament begins today in Benin City, with seven women teams contesting for the prestigious title.
The maiden edition of EDWFL, first of its kind in Edo State, known as Archbishop Margaret Idahosa Edo State Women Football League is aimed at developing Women Football in the State.
Recall that the Chairman of Edo State Football Association (Edo FA), Fred Newton Erhunmwunse had revealed that the opening ceremony will take place today at Benson Idahosa University (Heritage Campus) Ugbor, at 10:00am, as three games will be decided same day.
The participating teams include Palace Queens FC, Benin Red Soil Queens, Brave Heart Ladies, Genesis Queens, Heart Peak Sports club, Tiki Taka Ladies and Braavos FC.
Speaking ahead of the opening event of the tournament organise by the Edo State Football Association, Erhunmwunse stated that the Edo state Women Football League has come to stay, as it will go a long way in developing the women’s game in the State.
He however used the occasion to thank the Archbishop of Church of God Mission International, Dr. Margret Benson Idahosa for donating the trophy and other items for the tournament.
Notably, Edo State Football Association has joined the likes of Osun FA and others in organising State Women Football League aimed at developing the women’s game from the grassroots.
Expected at the tournament’s opening ceremony today, are the President, Benson Idahosa University, Bishop Feb Idahosa who is expected to take the ceremonial kick-off, his wife Rev. Laurie Idahosa, Director, Campus lLfe Division, Benson Idahosa University and Bishop Wale Ajayi and wife Fredda Ajayi.
Others are the Vice Chancellor, Benson Idahosa University, Prof. John .A. Okhuoya, members of Church of God Mission International, staff and students of Benson Idahosa University, Edo State Football Association members, football stakeholders among others.
