The Managing Director of Edo State Traffic Control and Management Agency (EDSTMA), Engr. Stainless M. I. Ijeghede, on Tuesday issued a 48-hour ultimatum to traders and drivers operating illegally on government roads.
This was disclosed in a statement made available to The Nigerian Observer by the Agency’s PRO, Andrew Osose Ojeabulu.
The directive, which takes today, was announced during a one-on-one enlightenment campaign carried out by EDSTMA in a decisive move to restore order and ensure the free flow of traffic, comes amid mounting complaints from road users about congestion and safety hazards caused by commercial motorists and roadside trading.
Engr. Stainless M. I. Ijeghede, emphasised that the roads are intended for public transportation and not for commercial activities.
“This enlightenment campaign is a peaceful one as the government belongs to the people. We are giving today and tomorrow as a period of grace.
“As from Thursday, 21st November, 2024, anybody caught abusing the roads within Benin metropolis will face the full weight of the law. As the baby presents itself, so it will be carried. We are not here to destroy your things or stop your business but this ultimatum is non-negotiable.
“Traders must vacate the roads within 48 hours to allow for smooth movement of vehicles and pedestrians. We cannot continue to tolerate actions that disrupt public order and safety,” Ijeghede said.
According to the Agency, affected areas include all roads in Benin City especially Ring Road, New Benin, Ekiosa Junction, Ramat Park, Obakhavbaye, Santana Market, among others, which have become notorious for traffic bottlenecks caused by makeshift stalls, commercial drivers and hawkers.
The Agency’s MD further stressed that failure to comply with the directive would result in enforcement measures, including the seizure of goods and legal actions.
Meanwhile, residents and motorists have welcomed the move, highlighting the challenges posed by roadside trading and loading.
“The congestion is unbearable. This directive is long overdue,” said Mr. James Igbinoba, a daily commuter.
Ijeghede urged traders to cooperate with the directive, warning that enforcement teams are on standby to ensure compliance once the deadline expires.
EDSTMA also called on the public to support the initiative, emphasising its importance in creating a safer and more organized urban environment.
