As the new administration in Edo State led by Senator Monday Okpebholo takes its reins, there is no doubt that there is a clear and powerful mandate to foster a robust agricultural sector that would not only feed the people, but also drives economic growth, generates income, creates employment and uplift the living standard of Edo people generally.

Edo state is blessed with abundant fertile land, with favourable climate that supports agriculture. Therefore, if properly harnessed it could position Edo State as a leader in agricultural production in Nigeria. Interestingly agriculture had always been the backbone of the state’s economy especially before and after independence. Unfortunately, it was neglected over the year by successive administration.

However, it is in realization of the fact that agriculture can provide millions with livelihood and contribute significantly to the state’s Gross Domestic product that Governor Monday Okpebholo has decided to harness it’s potential for the benefit of the state and the citizens.

It may interest people to know that Governor Okpebholo has a vision for sustainable agriculture. He has envisioned a comprehensive agricultural strategy that encompasses the entire value chain, that is, production, processing, distribution and marketing.

To drive this vision, Governor Okpebholo has planned to empower farmers by providing access to training, tools and technology. In addition farmers would be encouraged to form Cooperative Societies that will enable them to secure resources for farming.

Monday Okpebholo realizes that financial support is a vital component in transforming agricultural landscape. The government intention is to collaborate with financial institutions to provide affordable credit facilities and grants to farmers. The farmers would also be exposed to modern technology and by leaveraging on such technology and innovations productivity will be increase, while harvest wastages or loss would be reduced.
Governor Okpebholo is also committed to improving infrastructure such as roads, storage facilities and irrigation systems to support farmers.

Focus could also be shifted to supporting organic farming, agro-forestry and conservation agriculture. This will help create resilient and a better agricultural ecosystem. It is important to regenerate the state forest reserves by encouraging people to invest and develop interest in conservation agriculture. This will help cultivate and guarantee a prosperous future for our forest natural resources.

By revitalizing Edo State agricultural sector, Governor Okpebholo is not only addressing food security, but also creating jobs and securing the future. It is therefore imperative for the farmers and non farmers alike to join hands with government to harness the full potential of our agriculture heritage, and build a sustainable Edo State for generations to come. It therefore means that the journey to transform agriculture in Edo State is going to be embarked on by all citizens.
