On Friday, October 25, 2024, 75 students from JSS1-JSS3 of Kiddles Kollege Secondary School located at Upper Igun in Benin City, embarked on an educational excursion to The Nigerian Observer, located at 24 Airport Road, Benin City. Accompanied by three staff members, the students aimed to broaden their understanding of the printing industry and newspaper production processes.
Upon arrival, journalists warmly welcomed them and introduced them to the exciting world of newspaper production. The students shared their expectations and future aspirations. Simeon Divine, a JSS3 student, expressed her desire to learn about news sourcing and writing.
The Managing Director of The Nigerian Observer, Mr. Osa Victor Obayagbona, delivered a thrilling lecture on news writing, emphasizing the importance of verification to avoid libel. He stressed that journalists must excel in their field, as the profession has become increasingly competitive. “Journalism will expose you, if you distinguish yourself,” he noted.
The students were introduced to the various sections of the newspaper, including the different reporting beats. A curious student posed an intriguing question about the influence of print media on other media outlets.
The Managing Director commended the student’s inquiry and responded, “The media complements each other.” He illustrated this point by citing broadcast reviews of newspapers, explaining that broadcasting is an extension of print media, as print is the first medium of information.
During the tour, students visited various sections of the newspaper house, including the newsroom, where reporters write and gather news. At the Edo Printing Centre, they were amazed by the machines, including the web machine, folder, and page planning. They learned that the Web Machine printer, due to its speed, can produce 30,000-40,000 copies of newspapers, saving time and money.
The Editor, Mr. Chuks Oluigbo quizzed the students on their newfound knowledge, who also saw the Speed Master machine, used for printing magazines, notebooks, and textbooks, and the Large Format machine, which prints billboards, banners, and outdoor advertising materials on flex banners.
The educational visit successfully broadened the students’ understanding of the printing industry and newspaper production, preparing them for future endeavours, and the students concluded their visit by taking memorable photos to capture the excitement and knowledge gained during their time at The Nigerian Observer.
