ABUJA – President Goodluck Jonathan has urged Nigerians to go beyond their support for Gen. Muhammadu Buhari’s election by making sacrifices for the incoming administration to succeed
Jonathan made the call yesterday when the Christian community in FCT visited him at the Aso Rock Villa as part of activities marking the celebration of Easter.
“As a people, as a government, we should ask what sacrifice we are making. Now is not about supporting Jonathan or government.
“Now Buhari is coming on board; it is not about supporting Buhari or government, but what sacrifice as individuals we are willing to make for government and for the nation.
“If you are a businessman and you say you are supporting government, but you do not pay tax; how do you expect that government to survive?,” the President asked.
The President said that the development attained in advanced countries did not come from the blues, but through sacrifices made by the people.
Jonathan noted that in ECOWAS sub-region, Nigeria had the lowest VAT of five per cent,  whereas other countries charged up to 12 per cent?.
The president said that nation-building depended on two key elements; the sacrifice of individuals and the patriotism of the citizens.
The President thanked Nigerians for giving him the opportunity to serve, from being a deputy governor in Bayelsa, to becoming a vice president and later president.
In his remarks,Vice President Namadi Sambo said he was lucky to have worked with the President, adding that  he learnt much from his humility, sacrifice and commitment to nation building.
He said that the president had written his name in gold in Nigeria and Africa following the decision he took after the 2015 presidential polls.
The FCT chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Rev. Israel Akanji, who led the delegation, prayed for peace and progress of the country.
