BENIN CITY – Arrangements have reached advanced stage to reconstruct the dilapidated and rain-storm ravaged Anglican Girls Grammar School, Off Adesuwa Road, Benin City, in fulfillment of the promises of Comrade Governor Adams Oshiomhole.
It will be recalled that on February 11, 2015, while on inspection of the Adesuwa Road rehabilitation and reconstruction project, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, was ambushed and “hijacked” by young Anglican Girls Grammar School (AGGS) students led by Miss Aguebor Omosefe Joyce who passionately appealed “to the Governor to extend the “Red Roof Revolution to their school, which had suffered terribly from decades of neglect by successive PDP administrations, after the management changed hands from the missionaries to the Government.
As at yesterday, when the NIGERIAN OBSERVER visited the school, the scenario was that of Great expectation, excitement and expression of joy in anticipation of the Governor’s kept promise.
Speaking to newsmen yesterday, an elated principal of the senior secondary school of AGGS, Mrs. Felicia E. Okundia recalled that on February 11, 2015, after the school had closed the day’s session, some of the students stumbled on the Governor by Adesuwa Road while, on inspection of the road project.
“curiously, they ambushed the Comrade Governor, pleading with him to come and see the condition of their school, and possibly give the school a facelift as he had done with other schools, in what has become known as the “red roof” Revolution. They “hijacked” the Governor, and the man came here and instantly gave his word. As I speak, officials of the government have been coming to take statistics of the level of decay with a view to meeting the governor’s words with action. We are very happy,” the school principal stated.
Reacting to the development, yesterday, leader of the Edo Study Group, Comrade Nowinta Igbotako on behalf of other members remarked that the group was convinced about the commitment of the Governor to turn around the fortunes of the AGGS and commended him for his proactiveness.
Some of the students who also spoke with the NIGERIAN OBSERVER yesterday were full of excitement to learn that work will commence at the school premises today,” barring all odds.
It will be recalled that on February 8, 2015, a devastating rainstorm several AGGS buildings blowing off the roofs and structures, for which the school authorities petitioned the Education Ministry for help. Few days later, the students took their destiny in their hands and approached the governor, and succour came.
Anglican Girls Grammar School was established February 28, 1961 as a Missionary School but had since become a public school with government take over of some mission schools.
