The Oyo State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has praised the state governor, Seyi Makinde, on his recent approval of N80,000 minimum wage for the state’s workers, surpassing federal worker’s pay.
This development comes after Makinde’s earlier promise to pay N70,000 minimum wage once the issue of consequential salary adjustment was addressed.
The NLC state chapter chairman, Kayode Martins, in a telephone conversation with the Nigerian Tribune described the governor’s approval as a display of magnanimity and care for the state workforce. He said the governor had again demonstrated that he is a listening person and a true trailblazer as the approval will help boost the workers’ morale and increase productivity across the state.
“This is the first time Oyo State workers will be earning more than their federal workers counterparts,” Mr Martins said.
The labour leader, therefore, assured the governor that the workers will reciprocate the gesture by improving their productivity, saying the approved minimum wage is a huge morale booster.
He, however, appealed to members of the government team in the negotiation to show the same magnanimity by allowing for good consequential adjustment so that all workers across the board will partake of the Governor’s milk of human kindness.
Mr Martins thanked the workers for showing understanding and solidarity since the journey of the minimum wage started, urging them not to disappoint the system that is showing concern for them per time.
He assured the government of the commitment of the labour leaders in the state to partnering, encouraging and supporting course that improves and impacts positively on the workers in the state.
